Improved approximation for non-preemptive single machine flow-time scheduling with an availability constraint

چکیده
We study the problem of scheduling n non-preemptable jobs on a single machine which is not available for processing during a given time period. The objective is to minimize the sum of the job completion times. The best known approximation algorithm for this NP-hard problem has a relative worst-case error bound of 17.6%. We present a parametric O(n log n)-algorithm H with which better worst-case error bounds can be obtained. The best error bound calculated for the algorithm in the paper is 7.4%. In a computational experiment we test the algorithm with the performance guarantee set to 10.2%. It turns out that randomly generated instances with up to 1000 jobs can be solved with a mean (maximum) error of 0.31% (3.18%) and a mean (maximum) computation time of 0.8 (9.7) seconds.

An Efficient Bi-objective Genetic Algorithm for the Single Batch-Processing Machine Scheduling Problem with Sequence Dependent Family Setup Time and Non-identical Job Sizes
This paper considers the problem of minimizing make-span and maximum tardiness simultaneously for scheduling jobs under non-identical job sizes, dynamic job arrivals, incompatible job families, and sequence-dependentfamily setup time on the single batch- processor, where split size of jobs is allowed between batches. At first, a new Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model is proposed for t...
متن کاملShort Note on Scheduling on a Single Machine with one Non-availability Period
We consider scheduling on a single machine with one non-availability period to minimize the weighted sum of completion times. We provide a preemptive algorithm with an approximation ratio arbitrarily close to the Golden Ratio, (1+ √ 5)/2+ε, which improves on a previously best known 2approximation. The non-preemptive version of the same algorithm yields a (2 + ε)-approximation.

In real world scheduling applications, machines might not be available during certain time periods due to deterministic or stochastic causes. In this article, the machine scheduling with availability constraints for both deterministic and stochastic cases with different environments, constraints and performance measures will be discussed. The existing body of research work in the literature wil...
متن کاملMinimizing the Number of Tardy Jobs in the Single Machine Scheduling Problem under Bimodal Flexible and Periodic Availability Constraints
In single machine scheduling problems with availability constraints, machines are not available for one or more periods of time. In this paper, we consider a single machine scheduling problem with flexible and periodic availability constraints. In this problem, the maximum continuous working time for each machine increases in a stepwise manner with two different values allowed. Also, the durati...
متن کاملThe Preemptive Just-in-time Scheduling Problem in a Flow Shop Scheduling System
Flow shop scheduling problem has a wide application in the manufacturing and has attracted much attention in academic fields. From other point, on time delivery of products and services is a major necessity of companies’ todays; early and tardy delivery times will result additional cost such as holding or penalty costs. In this paper, just-in-time (JIT) flow shop scheduling problem with preemp...
